Preparing Soak Seed. Print

By Paul Girvan.

There are many different ways in which you can prepare your soakseed, and there are also many brands of

soakseed available on the market. What follows, is just my preferred method of preparation.

This method of frequent rinsing of the mix, usually results in chitting (sprouting) within thirty six hours.

STEP 1

Obtain a two litre plastic bottle of the Coca Cola type.

STEP 2

Cut the plastic bottle in half, retaining both parts of the bottle.

STEP 3

Carefully, using a drill or sharp nail, make a series of drainage holes in the screw top.

STEP 4

Add your chosen seed mix to the bottom section of the bottle, and fill with cold water.

STEP 5

After approximately twelve hours of soaking, transfer your mix to the top section of the bottle, and

insert the top section into the bottom section for rinsing.

STEP 6

Rinse your seed mix as often as possible. The more frequently you manage to do this, the

better your results will be.

STEP 7

I feed the mix to my birds just as the seed has started chitting. It should be obvious that the shell

of the seed is starting to split, and sprouting is occuring.

Using this method is very simple, and I find that it works well. There is no need to use hot or warm

water, bleach, heat or dark cupboards. The key to the success of this method is the rinsing stage.

Frequent rinsing prevents the mix from going sour, and helps to promote sprouting.

Leaving the mix to soak for longer than the initial twelve hours can also slow down the process.

I hope that this method works just as well for you, as it does for me.
